How Roman numerals work
Roman numerals combine seven letters — I (1), V (5), X (10), L (50), C (100), D (500), and M (1000). Values are added from largest to smallest (MMXXVI = 2026), except when a smaller letter comes before a larger one, which means subtraction (IV = 4, IX = 9, XL = 40). The standard system covers 1 to 3,999.
Common uses
- Dates on buildings, books, and film credits (© MMXXVI).
- Clock faces and watch dials.
- Sequels and events — Super Bowl LVIII, Rocky IV.
- Names of monarchs and popes — Henry VIII, Louis XIV.
