How Many Words Is a 5-Minute Speech?
A quick guide to how many words fit in a 1, 3, 5, or 10-minute speech — plus a free tool to count and time your script.
Writing a talk and not sure if it fits your time slot? The short answer: a 5-minute speech is roughly 650 words. But the right number depends on how fast you speak.
The speaking-rate rule of thumb
Most people speak at 130 words per minute when presenting. That's a comfortable, clear pace — fast enough to stay engaging, slow enough for an audience to follow. So:
- 1 minute ≈ 130 words
- 3 minutes ≈ 390 words
- 5 minutes ≈ 650 words
- 10 minutes ≈ 1,300 words
Adjust for your style and content
Slow, deliberate speakers (or technical topics with pauses) run closer to 110 wpm — aim lower. Energetic speakers hit 150+. If you'll pause for slides, laughter, or audience interaction, subtract words to leave room.
Count your script in seconds

- Trim or expand until you hit your target, then rehearse with a timer to confirm.
A tip for nailing the time
Always practice aloud — silent reading is much faster than speaking. Time yourself once, then adjust the word count by the difference. Two run-throughs and you'll land within seconds of your slot.
